Eating without guilt

This photo was posted on the swedish Weight Watchers Facebook page the other day. For those of you who aren´t fluent in swedish I can tell you that that´s the swedish Weight Watchers logo on the back of the car. On the back window it says; “Weight loss that lasts? Follow us, we know the way!” (Oh yeah and that´s the McDonalds Drive through if you didn´t notice.) Maybe most of you see this picture as ironic, but actually  this represents the Weight Watchers philosophy pretty well. Eat any crap you want as long as you count the calories. The problem with all these low calorie starvation diets, such as WW, Cambridge, Herbalife etc is that they don´t focus on health, it´s all about weight loss and starving yourself to get there as fast as possible, using all different kinds of low-fat high sugar food substitutes. It´s not about feeling better by providing your body with the nutrients it needs, it´s about hating yourself to the point where you are willing to deny your body of nutrition in order to be skinnier. That´s what diets are about, self hatred. You are not good enough. Instead of learning how to love ourselves now and because of that want what´s best for ourselves we must strive for physical perfection through hating ourselves, and feeling guilty every time we fall off the diet/self starvation wagon. Hate and guilt, a small price to pay for being perfect.

Awesome skin care tips pt 3

This is on of my favorite home made facial masks. It´s made with Aspirin, water and a regular (biological w/o any synthetic crap of course) facial cream, some aloe vera or even some natural yogurt (although I find this a bit too runny for my taste).

What we are going to do is our own home made BHA (Beta hydroxy acid) mask. BHA is salicylic acid normally found in anti aging creams but can also be derived from the acetyl-salicylic acid in Aspirin. BHA works as a very light chemical peel, it also cleans out your pores and can also bleach minor scars.

So here´s what to do:

Take 4-5 Aspirin and crush them.
Mix them with a few drops of water until you have a creamy paste.

Now here is where you can choose to simply apply this mix on your face (avoid areas around the eyes, and if you have inflamed areas of your skin) and let it dry, it takes about 5-10 minutes.

Option no 2 is to mix the aspirin-water blend with a biological face cream, or some aloe vera, natural yogurt or honey, and apply it to your face. I usually do it like this and leave it on a little longer for a better effect, about 15-20 minutes. (Try what works best for your skin, if you are very sensitive then it might be better to leave it for 5-10 minutes only.)

Then I take a soft face towel and soak it in warm water and gently massage off the mask until my face is completely clean.

This mask is amazing for properly cleaning out clogged up pores and remove dead skin cells, and it leaves your skin radiant and healthy looking.

Hungry for change

This is a really interesting video on why we need to stop dieting and instead focus on being healthy and happy. There´s such an obsession in society today on beauty and being skinny and perfect and we forget the most important reason that we´re here, to work on our minds, to evolve and become happy, loving, intelligent beings. Will write a longer post on this subject later but first go watch this video! It´s only available for free for 19 more hours, so click on the image below to watch it!

Awesome skin care tips pt 2

So if you cleaned out all the artificial crap from your bathroom cupboard after my last post :), you might want some tips on what to fill it with next. Ok, so there are various brands out there that sell biological skin care products without a bunch of suspicious additives in them, for example Dr Hauschka, Annemarie Börlind or my swedish favorite Rosenserien. However my absolute favorite and nowadays exclusively monogamous skin care lover is something you can get at the supermarket for just a few € (or whatever your currency is 🙂 ).

I´m talking about a regular bottle of extra virgin olive oil, it´s unrefined and completely natural and contains tons of vitamins and essential fatty acids for your inside as well as your outside. So what do we do with this? You mix it with a little bit of castor oil, which is also a completely natural oil, derived from castor seeds. Castor oil is deep cleansing and anti inflammatory which makes it ideal for people suffering from acne, oily or combination skin (I´m one of them). I´d say about 95% olive oil mixed with 5% castor is a good start, but since castor oil is deep cleansing after a while your skin might start to feel a bit dry, then you just put more olive and less castor. It really doesn´t take a lot to get the super effects of the castor oil. And if your skin is dry or sensitive from the start then just put 99,99% olive oil and a only few drops of castor oil, see what works best for you.

So I use this as a facial cleanser every night. Thoroughly massage the oil blend into your skin to dissolve all dirt and make up, then wash it off with warm water and a wash cloth to gently rub off the oil. Now since the oils are naturally moisturizing you don´t need to apply any cream afterwards. (In the morning just rinse you face with water and if you want apply a day cream with SPF to protect your skin from sun damage and pollution.)

In the begininng you might experience that your skin is actually getting worse (dirtier) but that´s only because all the dirt is being drawn up to the surface, so that´s a good thing. After all that crap is gone your skin will clear up. 🙂

If you have really inflamed acne I wouldn´t recommend this next one, which is a facial scrub, as it might irritate it, just use the olive castor oil blend until your skin has cleared up a bit.

This is a facial/body scrub that I use once a week to help remove dead skin cells and properly clean out stubborn pores. It´s basically baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) mixed with olive oil. (Mix it well in a small bowl.) First wash your face to get rid of make up and superficial dirt and so that your skin is soft, warm and slightly moist when applying the scrub. Lightly rub the mix onto your skin for a couple of minutes to make sure you get it all over and into your pores, then wash off with warm water and a wash cloth. This will give you baby butt skin, I swear!

Ok here´s you shopping list:

Organic extra virgin olive oil.
Organic unrefined castor oil. (For example this one from Fushi, but the important thing is that it´s unrefined and organic, as clean and natural as possible. (Refined castor oil will not work, believe me I bought one by accident once.)
Baking soda aka Sodium Bicarbonate (NOT baking powder, just saying in case there is some confusion).
A bottle for the olive-castor blend, preferably a dark glass one as it protects the oil from harmful sunlight, something like this:

Ok, I think that´s about it! Good luck! I also have more posts coming up on other awesome products so stay in touch if you´re interested! 🙂

Awesome skin care tips!

I´ve been using biological skin care products for the past 6 years now and the improvement of my skin condition has been amazing. The funny thing is I´ve spent years and years spending insane amounts of money on different products, thinking the more expensive the better product. That was before I started working in the health food business and learned all about glycerin, paraffin and other petroleum based oils that are added in basically all the conventional skin care products out there, whether it´s L´oreal or Clinique. Synthetic oils block your pores and make it impossible for the moisture to enter your skin. Meaning it will only lay on top of your skin making it temporarily soft, but the next time you shower or wash your face you´re dry again and need to apply more. Same for the cleansers, you can´t properly deep cleanse since the synthetic oils keep everything on top.

Mmm, mineraal ooil…

“Mineral oil acts as a thin layer on the skin. It is difficult to absorb and clogs the pores, which slows the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins. Remember, the skin is the body’s largest organ and plays an important role in maintaining overall health! Once the oil is absorbed, it is broken down by the liver and passes through the intestinal tract, it will absorb all of the fat-soluble vitamins found there. It is essentially stealing important vitamins from the body, which the body will not be able to replace. This can eventually lead to nutritional deficiencies. Studies have also shown forms of pneumonia caused by mineral oil decreasing lung function, known as lipoid pneumonia. Because of these dangers, the medical community has condemned the use of mineral oil taken orally or as an ingredient in medications.”(Source;)

Mmm, petrooleuum…

I know a lot of people will argue that if mineral oil was that bad for you it wouldn´t be allowed in all these skin care products. Well, I just woke up but unless there´s been a dramatic change since last night and the Dalai Lama was just proclaimed president, money still rules the world. And fact is mineral oils are cheap, it´s actually cheaper to buy the oil than to dispose it. And no, obviously it doesn´t have any instant harmful effects. However, as you may have noticed earlier in this blog, my favorite motto is educate yourself and learn to think for yourself, instead of trusting others to do it for you. So let´s look at this from a common sense point of view; mineral oils are by-products from refining gasoline (you know that stuff we put in our cars that are currently destroying the earth), does that seem like something you would want to rub your body in? I mean does that make sense?

So what to use instead? Fear not, I have a guide coming up in part 2!

“Wow, you´re so brave showing yourself in public like that, even though you put on a little weight!”

A while back ago a swedish blogger posted some pictures of herself on vacation in the Bahamas. Like most people on vacation she was hanging out on the beach, and like most people on the beach she was wearing some sort of swim wear, in this case a bikini. This post generated over 1400 comments, not about the beautiful beach or what a great time she seemed to be having with her friends. No they were all related to her body and whether or not she should be allowed to show herself in a bikini in public like that. There was the one side that thought she was way to fat to even leave the house basically, and then there was the other side, that to me is equally bad, the ones that applauded her for wearing that bikini with pride even though she put on a few lately. “You go girl!”

This girl is smart and independent, she is just a little over 20 and already running several businesses, and should be a good role model for young girls, and yet she will still be judged by the way she looks in a bikini. One of the companies is a magazine dedicated to boost young womens´ confidence and as a response to the 1400 idiots she did what any young woman with a magazine would have done, she posted herself naked on the cover. Now as a big F U to all the haters out there I think this is a great idea, and I know the thought behind it to encourage women to be proud of their bodies regardless of size is well intended. The problem is that it keeps focus on where it shouldn´t be, on womens´ bodies.

Let´s put this in a different perspective and switch the genders. If she were a guy who posted photos of himself on the beach, how many people do you think would post the same kind of comments? How many people do you think would feel the obvious need to point out whether or not he should be seen in public (on the beach!) with so little clothes on. How often do guys get to hear the phrase; “Wow, you´re so brave showing yourself in public like that, even though you put on a little weight! You´re such an inspiration to me! You go guy!”
If there are any men out there who have experienced this please let me know!

Feminism has come a long way in the past 100 years, we´ve achieved the right to vote, the right to drive, the right to have our own careers etc. Well I´m generalizing the western society of course. There are many parts of the world where we are no way near this kind of equality. However todays topic will be focused on western society since a lot of these countries take such pride in the level of equality reached. And yes, we should be, but does that mean we should stop fighting to improve further? Cause when a woman can have all the success and career that any man but it still comes down to the way she looks, we are still not equal. It´s the same kind of patriarchal structures just taking a different form.

This pretty much sums up my point! 😉

Will I be pretty?

To my future daughter and every little girl in this world.

When you approach me, begging, “Mom, will I be pretty?” I will wipe that question from your mouth like cheap lipstick and answer NO!
The word pretty is unworthy of everything you will be, and no child of mine will be contained in five letters.
You will be pretty intelligent, pretty creative, pretty amazing, but you will never be merely “pretty”.

If you still don´t get it:

Carrots are your friends

I don´t know about your parts of the world but here in Barcelona the temperature is going up, up, and the sun is shining and getting stronger every day. Thus, it´s time to start thinking about taking a little extra care of that skin of yours. (Especially if you were blessed with fragile scandinavian skin and happen to be living by the Mediterranean sea like me.) So what are the top three nutrients to stock up on this season…?

– Beta Carotene.
– Zink
– Vitamin E

Here´s why!

Beta Carotene
This might be the most famous antioxidant out there, as many people already know beta carotene is what gives carrots their bright orange color. Beta-carotene is a member of the carotenoids, highly pigmented (red, orange, yellow), fat-soluble compounds naturally present in many fruits, oils, and vegetables such as green plants, carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, spinach, apricots, and green peppers. Beta carotene can also be transformed into vitamin A, in the event that your body is lacking it. Any excess of beta carotene is then stored in your skin, which is why, if you eat too many carrots, your skin turns orange. Beta carotene is known to help the skin tan more easily, and a lot of people who suffers from sun rash has noticed a big improvement in the condition of their skin during the sunny months. I normally just try to take a beta carotene supplement for this time of the year, but this year I also bought organic carrot oil to give some extra aid from the outside as well. (Of course in combination with a high SPF cream, I never leave the house without it, unless I know I´m going to be covered up from head to toe all day.)

Organic Carrot Oil from Fushi.

Zink is an essential mineral, important for your immune system but also in the healing of damaged cells, such as your skin cells. (On a completely different note it is also believed to enhance your fertility and is crucial in the regulation of the male sex drive…) The best sources for zink are for example; liver, beef, chicken, eggs, seafood, wheat germ, pecan nuts, cashew nuts, sunflower seeds, and peanut butter.

Vitamin E (aka Alpha-tocopherol aka Gamma-tocopherol)
This fat soluble vitamin plays an important roll in protecting body tissue from damage caused by substances called free radicals. Free radicals are to blame for the process of the break down of cell, tissue and organs, also known as aging. Of course you cannot stop your body from aging, however making sure your vitamin E levels are stocked up is a good way to work against premature aging caused by for instance the sun and rough living. The body also needs vitamin E to help keep the immune system strong against viruses and bacteria.

The best way to up your vitamin E intake is through food. I always promote people eating healthy natural food before running to the health food store buying a supplement. Vitamin E can be found in leafy green vegetables, such as spinach or broccoli, nuts and seeds such as peanuts, sunflower seeds, almonds and hazel nuts, and also in vegetable oils such as sunflower oil, carrot oil and wheat germ oil.

PS. Don´t forget to stock up on a high SPF cream too!

Why your vagina is gross

So I recently read this article about yet another attempt to make money out of women’s insecurities and of course this is by pointing out to us that the most important thing in life is to be attractive to the male gender. Keeping the patriarchal society intact. Pheew, I was worried there for a second that the foundation was starting to crack, you know with women being given the rights to vote and drive and all. Good thing they found new ways to maintain power.

So this all started with an ad for Clean and Dry Intimate wash, a bleaching cream for your, yes that´s right, vagina! Apparently the shade of your lady parts is a crucial matter for your fuckability (by which all female value is measured naturally). I mean haven´t we all been there, right on the verge of intercourse when the guy just suddenly shudders at the sight of your vag, and runs out the room fighting his gag reflex. (Please don´t answer yes to that!) Hopefully your lover actually doesn´t give a crap what shade it comes in and is happy just to get access. Well, I´ll leave the rest to Lindy West, author of the article that seriously made me want to embrace my inner lesbian and propose marriage to her and her, surely, perfectly shaded vagina. Enjoy!

Your Vagina Isn’t Just Too Big, Too Floppy, and Too Hairy—It’s Also Too Brown

Good news, ladies! Society has discovered another new thing that’s wrong with you, which means another opportunity for you to make yourself more attractive for your man. Score! Turns out, the color of your vagina is gross and everyone hates it. So bleach that motherfucker. Bleach it right now!

In this commercial for an Indian product called Clean and Dry Intimate Wash, a (very light-skinned) couple sits down for what would have been a peaceful cup of morning coffee—if the woman’s disgusting brown vagina hadn’t ruined everything! The dude can’t even bring himself look at her. He can’t look at his coffee either, because it only reminds him of his wife’s dripping, coffee-brown hole! Fortunately, the quick-thinking woman takes a shower, scrubbing her swarthy snatch with Clean and Dry Intimate Wash (“Freshness + Fairness”). And poof! Her vadge comes out blinding white like a downy baby lamb (and NOT THE GROSS BLACK KIND) and her husband—whose penis, I can only assume, is literally a light saber—is all, “Hey, lady! Cancel them divorce papers and LET’S BONE.”

Needless to say, certain citizens are troubled by this product—which, in addition to just being fucking insane, brings up painful issues about the hierarchy of skin tone within the Indian community. As if it isn’t bad enough that darker-skinned people are encouraged to stay out of the sun and invest in skin-bleaching products like Fair & Lovely, and that white actresses are being imported to play Indian people in Bollywood movies, now everyone has to be insecure about the fact that their vaginas happen to be the color that vaginas are??? Splendid! God, I was just saying the other day that my misogyny didn’t have enough racism in it.

So what are the pro-vadge-bleaching people thinking? Here’s a hilarious explanation from a male ad exec:

It is hard to deny that fairness creams often get social commentators and activists all worked up. What they should do is take a deep breath and think again. Lipstick is used to make your lips redder, fairness cream is used to make you fairer-so what’s the problem? I don’t think any Youngistani today thinks the British Raj/White man is superior to us Brown folk. That’s all 1947 thinking!

The only reason I can offer for why people like fairness, is this: if you have two beautiful girls, one of them fair and the other dark, you see the fair girl’s features more clearly. This is because her complexion reflects more light. I found this amazing difference when I directed Kabir Bedi, who is very fair and had to wear dark makeup for Othello, the Black hero of the play. I found I had to have a special spotlight following Kabir around the stage because otherwise the audience could not see his expressions.

See? It makes perfect sense. We just want our vaginas to reflect more light—is that so wrong? I mean, WHAT IF MY CAR BREAKS DOWN AT NIGHT AND I DON’T HAVE A REFLECTIVE ENOUGH VAGINA? Really, the ultimate one-vagina-to-rule-them-all would glow in the dark like one of those deep-sea fishes. I need my vagina to attract more krill so my husband will fuck me again! (My husband is a whale.)

Basically the idea is to get as far away as possible from any color that vaginas actually come in. Because that’s what’s at the heart of this type of thinking—the perfect vagina would be something that’s not a vagina at all.
